The Unexpected 10.27.22
Jeremiah 29:4-14: God has a purpose and plan for you. His plans are sure, true, and faithful. You have an eternal future in Christ spiritually. God's plan for you is to prosper and grow spiritually in Christ in the very situation you are in right now.
October 27th we received some unfortunate and heavy news. We went in for a routine 20 week anatomy scan where our OB detected our baby’s heart appeared abnormal. We were immediately refereed to the Fetal Medicine Doctor in Billings. The following day Dr. Gorden diagnosed our baby with a Congenital Heart Disease called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) which is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. HLHS cannot be cured, but with medical advancements they have found ways for patients to sustain life through a series of three surgeries and medication.
Four days later, Corey and I flew out to The Children’s Hospital of Colorado upon recommendation from our doctors in Billings. After an echocardiogram, we met with our Pediatric Cardiologist who relayed that our baby’s left ventricle is pretty much non-existent which solidified her HLHS diagnosis. (Yes it’s a Girl! We had to find out what little person we were praying for )
If all goes as planned, Corey and I will travel to Denver for a follow up and then temporarily relocate near The Children’s Hospital Colorado three weeks before our due date to deliver baby girl there. Baby will receive a series of three open heart surgeries that are crucial for her to fight this and have a chance. The first surgery will be at a couple days old, the second will happen at 3-4 months old, after this stage we can bring her home and complete the final surgery when she is 3-4 years old. Unfortunately Billings isn’t equipped with a Pediatric Cardiologist anymore meaning we will stay in Denver until baby recovers from the second surgery.
Our Cardiologist gave us hope that baby girl is on the higher end of the spectrum of being a great candidate for surgery! She is safest in my belly right now so we just pray she makes it to full term and all the other parts of her heart remain healthy. Overall, our trip to Denver did somewhat relieve us as it was the best possible news considering her condition that we could have gotten!
If you are the praying kind, we could really use some for our little Warrior Girl! We feel Gods presence and have recognized his signs that this is the path we are suppose to be on. As our world was turned upside down this past week, we grasped at any positives and correlated any good news to the power of prayer. Baby girl has been extremely active showing off with her strong kicks and tumbles, reminding me she ready for this! I just feel it to my core that this little one is going to be a fighter!
We pray our baby doesn’t suffer and hope she gets an opportunity to live a beautiful life. We pray she helps inspire the world with her story by being our little miracle girl with half a heart. We pray that her big sisters navigate the future months/years of uncertainty as best as they can with bravery, grace, and understanding.
On behalf of Corey Schultz and I we want to thank our family and friends who have already showed us an outpouring amount of love and support. We are beyond blessed, grateful and feel so much comfort knowing we have a village to get us through this
